Panasonic GH5 video-optimised stills camera

introduction

  • formerly announced Jan 2017, due to ship Mar-April 2017

specs

  • 20.3mp, no AA low pass filter
  • 225 CDAF points instead of only 49 but no PDAF points as relies on the software based DFD C-AF tracking system (only works with Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lenses at this stage)
  • new Venus Engine 10 image engine - 1.3x faster, better high ISO (“2EV better than GH4” thanks to new High Precision Multi Process NR), improved DFD AF with 480 fps drive speed and the time for measuring the distance to the subject is 6x faster, while factoring the distance into in-plane or in-depth is 2x faster
    • ultra-high-speed AF of approximately 0.05 sec
    • By analyzing every single frame precisely, it achieves a maximum 200% higher precision frame detection with minimum motion detection error for higher tracking tolerance against moving subjects
    • customizable AF system: AF Sensitivity, AF Area Switching Sensitivity, Moving object prediction predictability
    • Multi-pixel Luminance Generation renders clear, sharp images by referring to a 9x larger area of pixel information during the de-mosaic process for precise detail reproduction
  • burst: 9fps with C-AF x 100RAW; 12fps without CAF
  • mechanical shutter to 1/8000 sec with flash sync 1/250th sec
  • electronic 1st curtain shutter to 1/2000th sec with flash sync
  • full electronic shutter to 1/16000th sec
  • weathersealed
  • awesome 3.68m dot OLED EVF with 0.76x magnification, 21mm eyepoint
  • 3.2“ 1.62m dots RGBW free-angle touchscreen LCD
  • 5 axis sensor based image stabiliser - 5.5EV Dual IS 2.0 with Panasonic OIS lenses
  • 6K 18mp 30fps H.265 jpeg only photo mode
  • 4K 8mp 60fps jpeg only photo mode
  • 4K H.264 video without the width cropping which was present on the GH4, so full width readout with internal recording
    • unlimited 4K 8 bit 150mbps 60p/50p video
    • unlimited 4K 4:2:2 10 bit 150mbps 30p video
    • unlimited 4K 8 bit 100mbps 30p video
  • higher level 4K video via HDMI:
    • 4K 4:2:2 10 bit 60p video
  • 1080HD 2fps to 180fps to give 7.5x slo-mo
  • choose between MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD formats at a variety of frame rates
  • ‘Cinelike D’ and ‘Cinelike V’ as well as ‘Like 709’ for compatibility with HDTV
  • embeds SMPTE-compliant Time Code either in Rec Run or Free Run count-up method
  • Gain and Shutter Angles
  • waveform or vectorscope monitor display
  • luminance level settings for 10-bit video
  • control over the highlight response rolloff (Knee point and Knee Slope)
  • new HDMI port type A (not a mini port), plus connecting an HDMI lead is now much more secure thanks to an included cable lock holder
  • new USB 3.1 port USB-C
  • new dual SD memory card slots - both UHS-II compatible and supporting U3 class cards as well as V60 class cards for 60mb/s read/write
  • new rear toggle joystick to allow faster AF point selection as an alternative to the rear LCD screen AF touch selection method
  • new rear rotating dial
  • new built-in microphone that helps cancel out camera noise
  • updated cleaner, more intuitive menu system
  • new Focus Transition function
    • removes AF errors by allowing the operator to define three focus depths before recording begins, then selectively switch between them, as they shoot, and you can choose the refocus speed (in five steps)
  • Post Focus function
    • enables users to select the specific focus point even after shooting – particularly helpful in situations like macro shooting where severe focusing is required.
  • Focus Stacking
  • shutter rated at 200,000 shots
  • can now use autoISO in manual exposure mode with exposure compensation set, and can assign slowest shutter speed for use in other modes
  • 5GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 LE Low Energy
  • same battery as GH-4 but different grip
  • 725 g (1.60 lb / 25.57 oz)
  • 139 x 98 x 87 mm (5.47 x 3.86 x 3.43″)
  • $US1999 body only

optional accessories

  • DMW-XLR1 XLR audio hotshoe adapter powered through the hotshoe to give Phantom power - 96khz, 24bit audio recording, physical audio level controls $US399
    • but unlike the GH4, no YAGH interface unit, so no SDI ports
  • DMW-BGGH5 Battery Grip holds 2 batteries
  • advanced V-Log L video mode and VLogL View Assist Function $US99

firmware v2

  • Professional 400Mbit ALL-I intraframe codec for 10bit 4K 4:2:2
    • ” incredibly cinematic, with flawless image quality and colour“
    • “so much easier and smoother to edit than the 10bit IPB codec and there’s no need for transcoding and just as good as ProRes”
    • you will need 300MB/s UHS-II cards and file sizes are almost 3x the size of the 150Mbit/s interframe option
  • 5K 10bit “Open Gate” High Resolution Anamorphic Mode (4992 x 3744)
  • Hybrid Log Gamma with view assist feature for HDR shooting
  • New and improved autofocus engine for video
  • Performance optimisations and bug fixes

issues

  • C-AF and DFD AF only works with Panasonic Micro Four Thirds lenses (and presumably not their Four Thirds lenses) and there is no PDAF for other non CDAF-compatible lenses
  • Dual IS only works with Panasonic OIS Micro Four Thirds lenses
  • Olympus ProCapture mode equivalent - the “Photo Mode” does not precapture full screen nor does it capture in RAW files
  • no closest eye detection AF
  • limited night still photography modes
