descendants of convict James GLARE and pioneer woman Eliza Sophia MILLS
Introduction:
James Glare was born 14th Feb. 1803 in Middlesex, England to parents Abram Joseph GLARE (1755-) and Arabella DAVIES (1763-) who married on 25th April 1786. He had older siblings John, Mary Ann and possibly William.
Abraham Joseph GLARE / GLEYRE (1755-) was born in the tiny rural village of Chevilly in Switzerland where most of the GLEYRE family seem to have originated. His father was Pierre Joseph GLEYRE (1711 - 1770), and his grandfather was Jean Abraham GLEYRE (1675–). There seems to be debate on who Jean Abraham GLEYRE's (1675–) parents were but nevertheless, he would certainly have had the same ancestors as the famous painter Marc Charles Gabriel Gleyre(1806–1874) who was also born in Chevilly and taught Monet, Renoir, Sisley and others after he moved to Lyon with his uncle. See Possible Gleyre relatives from Chevilly, Switzerland for more details on the Swiss connections.
In 1820, James GLARE was convicted of theft of a 5 pound note, and transported to Tasmania, Australia on the “Lady Ridley” at that time it was recorded he was a servant, 5'3.5“ tall, mid-brown hair and brown eyes. James married Eliza Sophia Mills (1814-1860): in 1830. He received a conditional pardon 1836 and by 1840 he owned land in Brisbane St, Launceston, Tasmania. James was granted a full pardon in 1846. In 1846 James took his family including Eliza, 6 children and Eliza's mother to Belfast / Port Fairy where they settled on a farm and bore another 4 children. James became a farmer, carrier and bridge builder - a stone bridge he built on the Princes Highway near Port Fairy still stands but has been bypassed.
It seems his daughter Eliza Ogle (nee Glare) recounted a story that James, “along with a party of men, were exploring the bush one day came upon a place where aboriginal tribes had fought. Several dead bodies were lying about, and between two logs they found a male aboriginal boy alive. He was handed over to Mr James Glare, who reared and educated him, and had him christened in the Church of England. He lived with the family for 30 years, being known as George Glare. Subsequently George died at the Framlingham Mission station.”
James Glare was of a benevolent nature and built a school and home for travelers, which he carried on at his own expense.
His remains were interred in Port Fairy but in an unmarked grave.
Their eldest child, John Glare (1831-1910) is my great, great, grandfather who married Frances Anne LOWE, my great, great, grandmother, in 1850. They apparently met in Tasmania, and Frances Anne followed him after he came to Port Fairy in 1846. Frances Anne had 15 children and was the district's coucherer.
Their eldest daughter, Eliza Glare married a son of a convict who had been transported to Tasmania and then moved to Port Fairy in early 1850's - perhaps the two convicts knew each other in Tasmania?
James GLARE's conviction for allegedly stealing 5 pounds in England.
Port Arthur convict settlement 1838
- only the worst were sent there - not James GLARE
Glare's Bridge - a stone bridge built by James GLARE which still stands today in Rosebrook near Port Fairy near the Princes Highway. He probably had lots of practice in the penal settlement in Tasmania!
Port Fairy / Belfast
- Capt John Wishart mapped this part of the coast after entering the bay in 1810 in his boat The Fairy
- The Mills brothers using the map from Capt Wishart, established temporary settlements in Port Fairy in 1826 as bases for their sailing and sealing activities
- other settlers came in 1827 including the ill-fated Sonny Dixon and his wife Matilda Dixon nee Schultz who was to become the centre of the sad legend of the Tooth Fairy which was to form the basis of the movie Darkness Falls
- The Henty brothers established a whaling station in nearby Portland in 1835 and directed much of the whaling activity along the south coast
- John Griffiths established a whaling station in 1835 and a store was opened in 1839.
- In 1843, James Atkinson, a Sydney solicitor, purchased land in the town by special survey. He drained the swamps, subdivided and leased the land, and built a harbour on the Moyne River. He renamed the town 'Belfast' after his hometown in Northern Ireland.
- The Post Office opened on 1 July 1843 as “Port Fairy” but was renamed “Belfast” on 1 January 1854 before reverting to the original name 20 July 1887.

- Eliza and Joseph OGLE settled on the Woodford road side of Tower Hill in c1850, when very little land in this part had been cleared or cultivated - the place where Koroit now stands was a primeval forest, and she has seen the gradual, transformation to the present thriving town.
- The lack of a water supply proved a great drawback, and for about three years a trip to the Yangery creek in a bullock cart was the only means of obtaining this necessity. Housewives used to do the weekly washing at Tower Hill lake, the drying process also being completed before clothes were taken home again.
- Good water was eventually obtained ou most of the farms by sinking wells.
- Joseph OGLE occupied several public positions in Koroit, having been a municipal councillor for some years, and Mayor, of the Borough
- Eliza was buried at Tower Hill cemetery 1)

"Black Tom"
- James and Eliza GLARE adopted an abandoned Aboriginal baby “Black Tom”
- according to my mother, sometime after 1842, whilst still in Tasmania, Eliza heard a baby crying in the bush as they drove by. James stopped and found the baby boy who they took home to raise him and brought him with them to Port Fairy and was mentioned in stories as “Black Tom”.
George GLARE
- c. 1845-
- George was an adopted orphaned aboriginal boy found in the bush by James Glare after a tribal clash had killed the adults
- christened, raised, educated and lived with the Glares for 30 years
- died at the Framlingham Mission station

John Henry GLARE (my grandfather) and Ted TERRY (with hat) in their tent after a storm on the gold diggings at Dry Creek in Victoria c. 1915. These two traveled together as shearers in the Murray region from the Wimmera and Mallee eastwards to south-eastern NSW and Gundagai. When they were not shearing, they prospected for gold. But their paths parted after my grandfather met his bride in Linga, Victoria whom he married in 1919.
John Henry settled on a farm about a mile away from his father's until John Henry and family moved to nearby Condah in 1936 and then to Portland in 1948.
Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester and Lord Nuffield (who founded Morris Motors) came to Portland in 1934 for Victoria's centenary celebrations and several of my relatives along with their friends are in the crowd to greet them.
