James BLACKWOOD (1800-1854) and Jane RINGWOOD of Norfolk, England
Introduction:
- James BLACKWOOD (1800-1854) of Hethel, Norfolk, England married Jane RINGWOOD (1796-?) on 3rd April 1820.
- James BLACKWOOD's parents are thought to be William BLACKWOOD (b. 1777), son of Robert and Mary, who married Frances SHEARING (1781-1806).
- NOTE: the Blackwood genealogy from Ballarat website here, shows a different parentage of Sussana BLACKWOOD (1824-1908) who married Robert LANE (1822-1904):
- James BLACKWOOD (1802-?), son of Sir Henry BLACKWOOD and Harriet GORE
- is this wishful thinking? I suspect so.
- Their 2nd daughter, my great, great grandmother, Susannah married Robert LANE and emigrated to Australia in 1855 (see Lane family ).
- Their son, James, was born in Wreningham, Norfolk in 1830 and emigrated to Australia with his wife Hannah MICKLEBOROUGH (whom he had married in Hempnall, NFK in 1852) and 2 eldest sons, James Nehemiah and John Henry, emigrating to Portland, Vic in 1857 on the ship “British Empire” and settled at Hotspur.
- Their 2nd son Isaac BLACKWOOD b. 1836 Hethel, Norfolk, England and emigrated to Portland, Vic on the ship “British Empire” in 1857.
- see history of Hotspur here.
- a few notes about another famous BLACKWOOD:
- Sir Henry Blackwood, of the Battle of Trafalgar fame was born in County Down, Ireland, son of Sir John Blackwood, whose ancestors came from Scotland in 1500 – 1600. It is recorded on the internet that John Blackwood of Bangor (B. 1591 d. 22. 05. 1663 – came from Scotland to Ireland. Bangor, Nth Ireland I guess.
- Sir Henry Blackwood, born 1771, died 14 Dec. 1832 - married three times:
- Jane Mary Crosbie daughter of Launcelot Crosbie on 12 Jan. 1795. No issue.
- Eliza Waghorn daughter of Capt. Martin Waghorn on 3rd June 1799 – 1 son – Capt Sir Henry Martin Blackwood. He was 2nd. Bart – born 11 June 1801 – d. 7 Jan 1851.
- Harriet Gore, daughter of Francis Gore, Governor of Granada, married 9 May 1803 ; 1 son – Arthur Johnstone Blackwood b. 25 April 1808 d. 1874.
- my mother also photographed the grave headstone of Baron Sir John TRELAWNY (d. 1756 aged 65yrs buried in Pelynt or Pendennis England) husband of Agnes who was daughter of a James BLACKWOOD Esquire.
- interestingly, I am descended from Susannah BLACKWOOD through my paternal AYTON side and coincidentally, my maternal GLARE tree has links to the BLACKWOOD tree via marriage of Mary Winifred BLACKWOOD to Joseph CAIN who is a descendant of James GLARE. Prior to my mother's marriage, I am not aware that they would have had knowledge of the Ayton tree. Susannah BLACKWOOD and her family emigrated to Tasmania where my Ayton ancestors had emigrated to while James BLACKWOOD and family emigrated to western districts of Victoria where my GLARE ancestors emigrated also.
