Panasonic G6 camera

introduction

  • the G6 was announced in April 2013 and improves upon the very popular Panasonic G5 camera by adding:
    • better 16mp sensor (same as Panasonic GH-2 camera but improved image quality although no native multi-aspect ratio)
    • faster AF
    • 7fps burst rate instead of 5fps (w/o AF)
    • 5fps burst instead of 3.8fps with AF tracking
    • 3x faster EVF, OLED type
    • 1040K LCD screen instead of 920K screen
    • 2 new scene options - 'Cute Desert' and 'Sweet Child's Face'
    • iAuto able to automatically select one of 9 scene modes to suit the scene
    • 'Clear Retouch' touch gesture-based heal tool
    • ability to touch objects in a photo and erase them with a content-aware fill (a ‘gesture based heal tool’)
    • NFC-simplified Wi-Fi connection for connecting to smartphones to control the camera
    • focus peaking
    • timelapse video mode
    • Progressive AVCHD 2.0 or MP4, 1080/60p/50p at 28Mbps
    • 24p 24Mbps video and full manual control
    • 25p 20Mbps MP4
    • BUT lacks the stand-out high bitrates and ALL-I options of the GH3
    • Zoom rocker switch near the shutter release
    • 40fps burst mode (and rumours of a 4K / 8MP burst mode at 20fps)

compared to the GH series

  • the GH series of Micro Four Thirds system are the current top models made by Panasonic and are differentiated from this G6 by:
    • Panasonic GH-2 camera has a unique over-sized sensor allowing uncropped native 16:9 aspect ratio images
    • highest HD video capabilities with highest movie quality
    • top panel switch controls that make it easier to select:
      • focus mode: S-AF, C-AF or MF
      • drive/self-timer: single, burst, self-timer
    • largest buffer and thus fastest burst rate
    • more powerful built-in flash
    • Panasonic GH-3 has remote TTL flash capability
    • higher price
