Canon 5Ds / 5DSR full frame dSLR

introduction

  • announced Feb 2015
  • finally Canon introduce a high megapixel camera to compete with the Nikon D800 dSLR series and provide an option mainly for studio, wedding and landscape photographers BUT clearly NOT for videographers as some video functions have been removed!
  • like the Nikon D800 dSLR, these cameras will probably need to be shot on tripod with mirror up delays to make the most of the pixels
  • if you don't like shooting all your shots on a tripod or don't print very large prints, buy a lower resolution camera, and better still, one with image stabiliser built into the camera and with better dynamic range such as the Sony A7 II or a Olympus OM-D E-M5 II

specs

  • 50mp weatherproof dSLR
  • 30MP APS-H crop and 19.6MP APS-C crop modes
  • optional R version has an additional AA-cancelling filter and gives more fine detail but risks moire artefacts
  • ISO to 6,400 (12,800 extended)
  • Canon say similar noise levels and pixel pitch of 4.14 micron to the EOS 7D II
  • Canon say similar dynamic range to 5D III so presumably not as good as on the Sony sensor cameras such as Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera, Sony NEX E-mount camera system, etc.
  • same 150,000 pixel metering sensor as the EOS 7D II which should give better C-AF tracking than the 5D III but not as good as the 1D-X
  • more controllable, motorized mirror mechanism with reduced mirror slap, like the one in the EOS 7D II
  • revised mirror lock-up mode that allows you to specify an automatic delay between the mirror being raised and the shutter opening to start the exposure, but unfortunately, no electronic first shutter to reduce shutter induced camera shake which can be quite problematic on high resolution cameras at certain shutter speeds
  • more stable tripod mount
  • 5fps burst
  • 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes
  • 64 AF points - 41 are cross type and 5 are double-cross type (same as the 5D III)
  • Dual DIGIC 6
  • interval timer and 1080/24p timelapse
  • 1080/30p video, no uncompressed HDMI output
  • USB 3.0
  • ~$US3800 or $A5000
