South-West:

    • 23km SW of Eildon (23-27min drive)
    • ~100km E of Broadford - 1hr 20min drive from the Hume Freeway
    • ~130km NE of Melbourne - around 2hr drive via Healesville
    • 18km 5-6hr fairly flat circuit through tall mountain ash including the optional 7km 1.5-2hr return side trip Royston Power Station to the tiny Rubicon Dam in a damp gorge which is the most attractive part of the walk

    • Royston Trestle Bridge and others
    • Rubicon Falls and dam
    • great views from the Winch House looking over the Goulburn Valley
    • the Rubicon River river descends 693 metres over its NW 26km journey to the Goulburn River from east of Buxton and a hydroelectric power station was built in 1924 and is now heritage listed. The forest is regrowth following the 1939 bushfires, although the region was again partly impacted by the 2009 fires.
    • there are three first come first served free camping areas located on the valley floor along the Rubicon River:
      • Rubicon is generally 5-7degC cooler maximums and 1-2degC cooler minimums than Lake Eildon
      • byo hand washing and toilet paper; avoid soap;
      • Kendall's - area suitable for caravans; drop toilets; elevation ~340m;
      • The Boys - drop toilet
      • Tin Hut - no toilets
      • other walks and attractions:
        • Cicada Circuit Trail - 6.1km circuit along both sides of the Rubicon River from The Boys Camp
        • Snobs Creek Falls - 100m drop - short walk from carpark
        • Morris Lookout - 4WD track from camp ground - closed over Winter
        • Mt Torbreck summit - 1516m altitude, steep 4km, 2hr return walk from Barnewall Plains visitor area on Barnewall Plains Rd

East:

  • Mt Buller:
    • snowfield with the famous Bourke St run

    • snow season:
      • Mansfield (45km from Mt Buller) has ski & snow chain hire, shops, bakeries & cafes
      • people staying overnight require over-snow transport from the car parks into the village via 4WD (cost is $22 pp return?)
      • day trippers can access the resort via the Horse Hill Chairlift which has nearby parking at $30/day?

    • summer on the alps is similar temperatures to Melbourne in June (ie. avg 7min-16max degC)
