released in 2008 to replace the lead-glass 1988 Canon EF 200mm f/1.8L lens and which gives closer focus, adds image stabiliser, weather sealing, is lighter and standardises the rear drop in filter to 52mm instead of 48mm
at f/4, it is optically similar to the Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L lenses at f/4 although sharper at the edges, but then it is 7x more expensive and almost 3x heavier!
edges become softer when used with a 1.4x TC III
some long CA wide open but gone by f/2.8
almost zero lateral CA, but much more when used with tele-extender 1.4x III
spherical aberration well corrected
almost zero distortion
even with TC, minimal coma even wide open
relatively high astigmatism of 7.3% and with TC 7.8%
smooth bokeh circles but narrow cat's eye in corners wide open of full frame and odd shaped on APS-C or at f/2.8 on full frame
1.87EV vignetting wide open on full frame and 0.74EV vignetting wide open on APS-C
lots of flare if sun hits front of glass
AF speed moderate - 1 sec (just over 0.5sec with focus limiter on)
