• entry level full frame dSLR to replace the ageing, technologically challenged 5 year old Canon 6D, and handles much like the Canon 80D APC-C dSLR

• it will have trouble competing with the Nikon D750 full frame dSLR and the old Sony a7 II full frame mirrorless camera let alone it's forthcoming replacement, and if sport or hand held 4K video is your thing, then the similarly priced but much faster and more versatile Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark II is a much better option, but if you already have loads of expensive pro Canon lenses, but can't afford a pro Canon dSLR, then this is a substantial step up from the old 6D except image quality disappointingly appears to be no better despite 5 yrs of years of technology!

• new 26.2MP CMOS full frame sensor with Dual Pixel AF for Live View mode which provides 80% vertical and lateral coverage, and the option to set focus point by touch - a better AF experience than in optical mode except the lenses are not optimised for this.

  • 45 PDAF AF points in optical mode and they are all near the centre of the frame but at least they are all cross-type (the 6D only had 11 points)
  • burst rate only 6.5fps (the 6D only had 4.5fps)
  • flash sync speed only 1/180 sec
  • exposure bracketing limited to ±3 (3 frames at 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV steps)
  • shutter speed only to 1/4000th sec
  • no 4K video, only 1080HD 24-60p MPEG-4, H.264 video
  • SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot - only one sot and only UHS-I
  • only USB 2.0 not USB 3.0
  • no focus peaking

  • despite a new technology sensor, its best dynamic range is the same as it the older model and 1EV less than the Canon 80D and almost 2 EV worse than the Canon 5D Mark IV dSLR!

  • high ISO and dynamic range worse than the version 1 camera - appears to exhibit more of a magenta color cast and less contrast in shadow areas at high ISO, as well as 0.5EV more luminance noise
  • ISO invariant design but 0.5EV WORSE noise at high ISO than the older model!
  • A unique feature of Canon full-frame cameras is that when LENR is on you can take several exposures in quick succession before the dark frame kicks in and locks up the camera, but this is now limited to 3 images, not 4.
