- descendants include a line of Aytons who also lived in Longford, Tasmania
- there may be a link between this Richard LOWE and my ancestor, Frances Ann LOWE also of the Launceston region
- there may be a link between the Lanes they married and my ancestors, the Lane family who also lived in Longford
- Richard Henry LOWE (1811-1897) was a sawyer (see here) born in Hobart and died in Melbourne (see here).
- his parents were:
- James LOWE born c.1774 in Mitcham Surrey England. He died 9 Oct 1842 in Tea Tree Brush Richmond Tasmania Australia.
- at age 26 while living in Surrey, England, he was arrested for stealing some printed cotton and in April 1800, was tried and sentenced to 7 years transportation as a convict. He arrived at Port Jackson, NSW in 1801.
- In May 1802, he arrived at Norfolk Island via the ship Minorca.
- in 1805 he married Mary Standley who was 18yrs younger than him.
- in March 1808, aboard the Lady Nelson, he, Mary and 2 eldest daughters sailed to Van Dieman's Land as Norfolk Island was abandoned as a settlement.

- Mary STANDLEY was born 16 Aug 1792 in Norfolk Island. She died c1820 in Van Diemens Land (Tasmania), Australia. Mary married James LOWE on 23 Sep 1805 in Norfolk Island.
- James LOWE then married a widow and a convict, Judith CONWAY (1792c-) b. in Limerick, Ireland who had married William COBB (1774c-1820c) in Hobart c1816 and had two children to him - William & Hannah COBB.

- on 1st Feb 1832, he married Hannah FLAHERTY who was born in 1816.
- Hannah's parents were:
- Thomas FLAHERTY
- Thomas FLAHERTY was a convict on the “Atlas” in 1802 and had 4 children: Hannah, Margaret, Thomas and Patrick (1825-) and died in 1849 in Longford, Tas.
- Jemima HERBERT was born in 1799 on Norfolk Island but baptised in 1806. Jemima was evacuated from Norfolk Island on the “Porpoise” The vessel left the island on the 26 December 1807 and arrived at the Derwent River,Van Diemen's Land on 17 January 1808.182 Norfolk Island settlers were landed. see here.
- he then married Sarah WILCOX and had the following children:

- Jemima HERBERT's parents were:
- John Alexander HERBERT b. 26 Apr 1767 in Holborn, London, was a First Fleet Convict and died in 1846 in Westbury, Tas. See image of baptism record and photo of grave where he was buried with Hannah.
- John Alexander Herbert born at a private dwelling in a narrow street called Long Lane which is situated in the District of Smithfield, Parish of St.Andrews, Town of Holborn, County of London, Country of England. He was christened in St. Andrews Church. Tried and convicted at Old Bailey Criminal Court for stealing a silk handkerchief value one shilling on 21/04/1784. He was sentenced to 7 years and sent to Australia on the “Scarborough” one of the transports of the “First Fleet ” of 1788. In 1790 he was one of the convicts sent to Norfolk Island on the “Sirius” He was allotted ground and by 1794 he was selling grain to the stores. He was also appointed as a constable. He had several children to Hannah Bolton alias Moore. On the 18 February 1813 with two children, James and Elizabeth he boarded the “Minstrel” at Norfolk Island. The vessel containing settlers and soldiers, arrived at Port Dalrymple on 4 March 1813. His property at Norfolk Plains was called “Rocky Hill”. (see here)
- a commemorative plaque was laid in Westbury, Tasmania on Australia Day 2010 to honour him being a First Fleet Convict
- his parents were:
- James HERBERT (christened Jan 20th, 1734) son of William and Susannah HERBERT - see image of baptism record and close up image, and
- Elizabeth Bennett, daughter of Henry Bennett, married James in 1762 - see image of marriage record
- Hannah BOLTEN MOORE b. 1769 in Warwickshire and was a Second Fleet Convict.
- On the 7 August 1787 at the Warwick Assizes she was sentenced to seven years for burglary. She was later sent to the “Lady Juliana” transport which sailed from the Thames on 4 June 1789. On 1 August 1790 two months after landing at Sydney Cove she was among the 194 convicts, mainly women, who were sent to Norfolk Island on the “Surprise”. In November 1791 the Rev. Richard Johnson briefly visited the island and married a number of couples. No record of these ceremonies have survived. Hannah does not appear on any Norfolk Island victualling list after 1800. Some researchers believe the Ann Moor buried on Norfolk Island, 4 September 1801, was Hannah Bolton/Moore. (see here)
- her partner in crime, Elizabeth RICHARD was also transported with her to Norfolk and later married Michael NOWLAND who was transported on the Scarborough in 1790.

- Oscar, a wicker worker and his wife Eleanor were charged with assault of a plumber in 1925 apparently after Oscar discovered him embracing his wife at his home after he had left for work - see here and here. They were found guilty of assault and sentenced to 18 months prison, and Oscar was to be whipped. see here

Richard "George" AYTON (1823-1886):
- see convict Richard "George" Ayton (1823-1886) for his ancestral tree dating back to 1655 of Aytons in Diss, Norfolk
- convicted at 18yrs old with another man Richard Sullivan aged 19yrs in London for stealing a handkerchief from a man's breast pocket at Temple Bar, London after the pair had been followed by police who then allegedly witnessed the crime but were then unable to find the victim.
- found guilty and both were sentenced to 10yrs imprisonment and transported to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) in Australia.
- according to his conviction records, he lived in Boro, London, worked as a butcher, could neither read nor write and was son of Christopher AYTON, brother of William, Christopher, Henry and Robert.
- on release from imprisonment, he married Margaret LOWE in 1851 in Launceston, Tasmania and lived with his wife and children in Longford, Tasmania.
- They produced a line of descendents some of whom remained in Tasmania, but many migrated to Melbourne, while his sons Algar and Alfred migrated to Western Australia.
