Margaret “Mary” PEDDER (1822-1897) of Saint John, Preston, Lancashire, England, was a convict transported to Van Dieman's Land on the Garland Grove in 1841 after being convicted of stealing a cheese
she was the daughter of:
- James Greaves PEDDER (1797-) of Garstang, Lancashire, England
- Elizabeth “Betty” WILLIAMSON (1796-) of Pilling, Lancashire, England
Margaret appears to have had a habit of absconding whilst a convict with her records indicating 4 such offences plus one for insubordination which resulted im 12 months hard labour, and one for misconduct - the latter resulted in 3 months solitary confinement
it appears James PEDDER was the illegitimate son of Margaret PEDDER and John THOMSON, a convict constable
Ticket of Leave granted to Margaret on 14 April 1846
was refused permission to marry convict Richard Mold as he was already married with wife in England
Margaret married John STEWART, a free man, in Sept 1847
Certificate of Freedom granted on 22 June 1849
she died in 1897 in Westbury, Tasmania
she does not appear to be related to Sir John Lewes Pedder (1784-1859) of London who was a judge, politician and the 1st Chief Justice of Van Dieman's Land in 1823, and for whom, Lake Pedder was named.
