4 stages of design process:

• Inception:
  • "bright idea" for a project
  • users to develop & document in broad terms:
    • business context
    • business process
    • business objects
    • business rules
  • determine approximate costings
  • how it would be funded
  • time lines required/feasable
  • outcome criteria
  • finally develop business case for project based on costings and returns which will determine whether it should proceed.
• Elaboration:
  • develop a working architecture or framework for program construction
• Construction:
  • write program to alpha test working solution
• Transition:
  • beta test
  • user help/documentation
  • final operational software
  • assess success based on original outcome criteria
