Introduction:

John Ayton was born c1826 in Islington, London, where he served his apprenticeship as a salesman in a furnishing warehouse.
He emigrated to Tasmania, Australia on board the "Derwent River" in 1858 and carried on business as an agent before opening and operated a prosperous furniture warehouse in 1874.
He married Eliza Ann REDFORD on 9th July 1859.

presumably he is the John Ayton living in Liverpool St, Hobart in 1867 - see here
and perhaps he is the J. Ayton business referenced in this Encyclopedia of Tasmania 1900 (pdf)
He died on 8/11/1894 at O'Brien's Bridge (now called Glenorchy), Tasmania.
- interestingly, Peter and Ann Ayton also lived there - perhaps they were relatives
although not a direct relation to me, the following were found by my sister on a genealogy research trip to Hobart where it was buried away in the microfiche archives of the local newspaper.
