best travel camera kit

Introduction
- on this page I am emphasizing a camera kit that covers a good range of focal lengths - at least from 24mm to 200mm in full frame terms, preferably weathersealed with image stabilization (so you don't need your tripod for most shots) and relatively light, compact and not super expensive but with good enough image quality for a 20“x30” print
- for carry-on baggage in planes it should be well under 5kg in weight, preferably under 3kg to allow for your iPad/laptop and other travel items.

Focal range covered in FF terms | 14-300mm | 16-200mm |
Pros | better sports features, better grip, better weathersealing, MF clutches, much more focal range | better Eye AF for moving subjects and animals, 1EV more shallow DOF and 1EV better IQ |
Cons | Selected portrait lenses and night lens are not weathersealed and have 2EV less narrow DOF, but travel is about context so this is probably not an issue; the UW zoom cannot be used with a filter; | almost 50% heavier and almost 50% more expensive; there are no suitable native lens options to get to 300mm apart from the very heavy and very expensive 100-400mm lens, and any good full frame lens to 300mm will be well over 1kg - a travel alternative is to add a Sony APS-C NEX camera to give that reach with the 70-200mm lens |
