introduction
- Nikon DX lenses are designed for the 1.5x cropped sensor Nikon dSLRs and have a smaller than normal image circle and thus will not function on a full frame dSLR
- Nikon has a wider range of cropped sensor lenses than does Canon, perhaps as they delayed the production of a full frame dSLR and their users were more reliant upon DX dSLRs.
- interestingly they did create a fisheye and a standard lens.
- like Canon, the early versions of the standard zooms were particularly poor that they were an embarassment, thankfully version II were significantly better but still not great
- unlike the Olympus Four Thirds dSLR system lenses, none of these are none are weatherproofed, none have an aperture wider than f/2.8 except the 35mm f/1.8 which is hardly great quality wide open, and most would struggle to beat even the consumer range of Olympus Four Thirds dSLR system or Micro Four Thirds system lenses in terms of optical quality across the frame.

standard prime
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G
- 2009 model, 52mm in 35mm terms
- “Slightly soft and low in contrast wide open
- Lateral chromatic aberration somewhat higher than traditional 50mm 'standard' primes
- Prone to purple fringing and bokeh chromatic aberration, most visible at large apertures”1)
- to get reasonably sharp across the frame, it needs to be stopped down to f/2.8
- the above is disappointing given that the whole reason for buying this lens is to use it wide open.
