Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM lens
introduction
- wide angle rectilinear prime lens offering 63º diagonal field of view = 40º vertical and 56º horizontal
- 35mm focal length is a favourite focal length for street photographers and travel photographers although they would probably prefer a more compact f/2 or f/2.8 version
Canon EF 35mm F1.4L II USM
- announced Aug 2015
- totally re-designed optics make it MUCH HEAVIER at 760g not 580g and much longer 106mm not 86mm!
- 9 blades not 8 for nicer 18-ray sunburst effect
- 1st lens to incorporate Canon-designed Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics for less CA as the BR optic can significantly refract blue light
- flourine coating helps to repel liquids and dust particles
- now weathersealed

reviews
-
- very sharp wide open and sharp to edges - the sharpest 35mm f/1.4 lens to date
- vignetting 2.34EV in corners
- 0.33% barrel distortion
- minimal CA, much less purple fringing, LoCA and softness and flare wide open than Mark I version and much less distortion
- actual transmission T1.7
-
- T1.7, 0.1% distortion, 2.3EV vignetting, 4 micron CA (all quite similar to Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art full frame lens)
- 80% acutance centre, 68% edge a little better than the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art full frame lens especially at the edges
- centre doesn't get much sharper on stopping down, edge sharpens a little more at f/4-f/8
-
- sharper, faster AF and more accurate focus than f/1.2 or the Sigma Art, but it does have a lot of vignetting
- hand holdable to 1/4 sec with care

- this lens was introduced in late 1998

reviews
-
- Ken's review is quite at odds to Photozone.de - perhaps due to variation in lens manufacturing
- “ultra-sharp and free from ghosts and most distortion, it has great bokeh”
-
- 1.5% barrel distortion
- 2.4EV vignetting
- sharpest centre at f/2.8 when it is extremely sharp, but very soft corners wide open - best overall at f/5.6
- 1px lat. CA and considerable long. CA
- bokeh is nervous
-
- “simply monstrous vignetting on full frame”
- significant coma but well-corrected astigmatism
- low CA, low distortion
- poor corner image quality
-
- not quite as good as the more affordable Sigma 35mm f/1.4 which has less CA
-
- Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART lens is sharper across the field, smoother bokeh, less CA, and almost no vignetting wide open!
-
- 0.4% distortion
- 2EV vignetting
- 16micron CA
