Canon 6D

introduction

  • announced in late 2012, it is the world's lightest and smallest full frame dSLR and Canon's budget level response to Nikon's D600
  • it is a cut down version of the Canon 5D Mark III dSLR with almost every aspect reduced in speed or functionality as well as size but it does have a nice 20mp full frame sensor and the following advantages over the 5D Mark III:
    • WiFi with ability to control the camera remotely via your smartphone
    • built-in GPS
    • smaller and lighter
    • centre AF point more sensitive in low light - a whole stop more so
    • interchangeable focusing screens

specs

  • 20.2mp full frame sensor with ISO 100-25600 standard, 50-102800 expanded and ISO noise is about 1 stop better than the 16mp Olympus OM-D E-M1 of around the same era, but less dynamic range
  • shutter speed range only 30sec - 1/4000th sec which might be a show stopper for some
  • “drip” splash and dust resistant body although top plate is plastic and less solid feel than the other full frame models
  • similar viewfinder to the 5DIII with 21mm eyepoint
  • DIGIC 5+ image processor as with the 5D III and 1D X
  • 4.5fps burst to 15 RAW frames then drops to 1.4fps (8 RAW + jpeg dropping to 1.1fps)
  • electronic silent shutter mode but burst reduced to 3fps
  • only 11 point AF system instead of 61 points
    • very limited area covered - just the centre
    • only the center point is cross-type and sensitive to -3 EV
    • doesn't offer any expanded coverage as did the 9-point system on the EOS 5D Mark II
    • no EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition), so it can't recognize subjects based on face and color as can the 1D X
  • 63 zone iFCL dual layer metering system only sees warm vs cool tones as with 5DIII
  • flash sync a very average 1/180th sec which might be a show stopper for some, but it is compatible with WiFi TTL flash and the ST-E3-RT
  • no AF illuminator nor built-in flash
  • LCD overlay on the focusing screen to show grid-lines but you can change focus screens for this such as:
    • Eg-D grid screen
    • Eg-S screen designed for more-precise manual focus with fast lenses
  • fixed non-touch 1040K dot LCD
  • only one SD card slot, no CF card slot!
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS
  • electronic level is only on one axis
  • mirror lockup now easier to access via menu
  • 6 WB presets
  • Live View settings and functionality is dodgy and very limited, but face detect AF for static face seems to work OK, although you don't get the closest eye AF as with Olympus cameras, and you can toggle exposure simulation on and off via the live view menu for studio flash use
  • in-camera HDR and Multiple Exposure modes, but implements these as JPEG only options not as RAW
  • no on-chip phase-detection to aid autofocus in live view or movie mode
  • no sensor based image stabiliser
  • basic 1080p25/30 video recording but does have Auto and Manual audio recording level control
  • exposure compensation ±5 (at 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV steps)
  • lens aberration corrections for vignetting and CA
  • can set slowest shutter speed for auto ISO settings
  • No way to reset file number prefix
  • only USB 2.0
  • N3 type remote control
  • monaural mic but does have a stereo headphone socket
  • HDMI
  • 770g
  • 145 x 111 x 71 mm (5.7 x 4.4 x 2.8“)
  • same 7.2V, 1800mAh LP-E6 battery as the 5D Mark III
  • $US2099 RRP when released in 2016, ~$A1900
  • optional BG-E13 battery grip
