  • Powelltown
    • historic small timber milling “town” established in the 1890's and named after the Powell Wood Processing Company which harvested mountain ash in the Upper Yarra Valley.
    • the Powelltown Tramway provided a passenger and goods service to Yarra Junction between 1913 and 1945.
    • 85km (1.5hrs drive) from Melbourne CBD
    • now consists of a pub, saw mill and a few houses
    • bushwalks:
        • Ada Tree walk: 3.2km, 1.5 hrs return; 270 year old, 75m tall tree with 15m circumference at 1.5m from ground
        • Seven Acre Rock: 1.2km, 30min return; granite outcrop with views
          • on a clear day you can see from Port Phillip Bay to the west, past the rapidly expanding suburbs of south east Melbourne, over Western Port and French Island to the rolling hills of Gippsland to the south east
        • Reid's tramline:
          • 6km, 2.5hrs return
          • follows the route of the historic tramline along which horses, and later, steam locomotives once hauled logs out of the forest
          • relics of the former mill and tramline can still be seen

          • Big Pats picnic area to Starlings Gap: 9km 3.5hrs;
          • Starlings Gap to Ada No.2 Mill: 8km; 3hrs;
          • Ada No.2 Mill to Highlead Carpark: 5.5km 2.5hrs
          • Highlead Carpark to Powelltown picnic area: 10.5km 3hrs
        • Richards Tramline: 9km one way; 3hrs
    • camping:
      • Latrobe River Camping Area
      • Starlings Gap
  • Noojee  
    • first settled after gold was found in the area in the 1860s.
    • Noojee became a major timber town when the railway connected the town to Warragul in 1919
    • town was destroyed by bushfires in 1926 and again in the Black Friday fires of 1939
    • only the 1925 Noojee Hotel survived these 2 bushfires
    • good for trout fishing
    • Noojee Trestle Bridge Walk: 6km return; 2hrs
    • Toorongo Falls walk
    • Glen Nayook rainforest walk at Neerim Junction: 1.5km return; 30min
  • Mt Baw Baw:
    • winter snow skiing resort
    • usual access is from Moe
    • access from Noojee is 48km taking 1 hour
    • Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort
      • Summit walking track: 2.5km return; 2hrs
      • Mushroom Rocks walk: 3km return; 2hrs
  • Walhalla:
    • usual access is from Moe
    • access from Noojee via Tanjil Sth (almost to Moe) is 92km taking 1hr 40min (this route does NOT pass Mt Baw Baw)
    • access from Mt Baw Baw is 46km taking 1.5hrs in good, dry weather
    • gold mining town with last main mine closing in 1914?
      • generally runs weekends, Wed and public holidays but see website for timetable
      • government built train line started in 1904 and finally closed in 1956
      • restored from 1993-2002
    • Poverty Point Bridge walk: 8km return; 3hrs
    • Walhalla tramline walk: 15min-1hr;
    • Great Walhalla Alpine Trail: 40km one way; 2 days, 3 nights
