camp grounds in Victoria

  • this website is mainly about camping in non-commercial camp grounds
    • commercial caravan “holiday parks” are found in most regional areas and offer the best facilities for families - usually including camp kitchens, hot showers, children's play equipment and swimming pools as well as options such as on site cabins with en suites and verandahs for shade
      • many have a large proportion of sites taken up by permanent residents
      • most sites are designed to closely cram in as many caravans as possible - tent camping is usually not a priority and tent camping is not great if you are sandwiched between caravans, but many parks do have more scattered unpowered tent sites
      • unfortunately International insurers have abandoned insuring caravan parks in Australia as they face high natural risks such as fires and floods (many are near rivers or on flood plains) and as such insurance premiums for most parks are far too high and so many now only have public liability insurance (often premiums are 20% of annual turnover) and without Government intervention, this is likely to see many shut down over the next decade which will not only impact caravan owners but also accommodation for 12,000 permanent park residents in Victoria (85% of whom are in regional areas)
        • a side effect is that many who still have insurance are now required to enforce additional safety measures upon tourists such as needing to BYO 15A earth leakage devices, etc - read their fine print!
  • many areas have seasonal road closures that are in place from the Thursday after the Queens Birthday Long Weekend in June until the Thursday before Melbourne Cup Weekend in November.
  • some camp grounds are closed over winter - mainly to stop permanents staying there - check before you go
  • some streamside camp grounds will be closed for repairs after flood events
  • you are NOT permitted to drive onto beaches in Victoria (this is allowed in Sth Australia though but your insurance will probably not cover you!)
  • in general, you are NOT permitted to camp within 20m of a waterway in Victoria
    • YOU CAN generally CAMP anywhere in Vic State Forests as long as > 20m from waterway and for not longer than 28 consecutive days although you should use designated camp grounds where possible to protect the forest HOWEVER in Forest Reserves you can ONLY camp in the official campgrounds provided by the land manager but not in informal locations where there are no facilities. 1)
  • in general, you cannot have solid fuel fires or BBQs in most commercial camp grounds, nor in some Nat Parks such as Wilsons Prom
  • most commercial camp grounds now require you bring a fire extinguisher (whether tent or van) and 15A tested power lead with earth leakage device if connecting to their power
  • you cannot take pets into National Parks and cats are banned in Halls Gap
  • dogs are allowed at most non-commercial camp grounds in Victoria with some EXCEPTIONS:

  • dogs at camp grounds can be very problematic, so consider leaving them at home or at least have them on a leash:

    • poo collection - it is mandatory that you clean up after your dog at camp grounds

Beechworth / Bright region

  • At Kangaroo crossing Eldorado side there are several spots within 10m of the creek, the other side of the crossing the creek access is a little more difficult. There are many other sites heading towards Beechworth on the creek side, right through to Woolshed falls.
  • Buckland valley better than Eldorado?
  • Nug Nug (SW of Myrtleford) on Buffalo River
    • runs an honesty box system. Super kid friendly, tennis court, creek on the site and waterhole nearby for swimming.
  • Smoko campground on Ovens River Harrietville
    • Dredge Hole at Harrietville great for canoeing and swimming;
    • can have lots of rubbish left behind

Far NE Victoria

  • Rutherglen region
    • Police Paddocks
      • Pleasant bush camping on broad open grassed banks extending along Murphy Creek, a Murray River anabranch.
      • One bench and one BBQ. No beaches. BYO water; no toilets;
    • Stantons bend
      • large dispersed bush camping reserve with 15 sites on the banks of the Lake Moodermere, west of Rutherglen
      • A long stretch of sandy river beach offers safe swimming and thus popular with families; low cliffs rising just downstream of the reserve makes for a stunning visual backdrop.

Cobram area

  • Between Cobram and Tocumwal. Koonoomoo is more precise.
    • Go past the abattoir and race track, over the levee bank and there is the river. On your left you'll see a pumping station. Go right and follow the track until it meanders left - follow it over a little log bridge to a private, quite small beach that is close to town and public toilets. Gets crowded early, before long weekends etc. If you have 4-5 families and can get there early enough then you own it. Go left and follow any of the tracks off to the right and you'll find a few large beaches, plenty of sand, great for ski boats, tents, caravans

  • Area opposite town boat ramp
  • Big toms Beach, dead end beach.
  • near horseshoe take Quicks Beach 2 track

  • Mitchell River (NW of Bairnsdale):
    • Angusvale is huge plenty of space even at Easter, toilets
    • Bark hut camp park - not free though and very busy at Easter
    • Hollets camp ground - Green grass and clean toilets
  • Reeves Beach - free, drop loo, 2 min walk to beach
  • Paradise Beach
  • Willow Park, Rosedale is a popular free overnight stop
  • Marlay Point 48hr camp on west shore of Lake Wellington, near Sale
  • Loch Sport
  • Blue Pools Briagolong - can hike to McKinnons Point and back
  • The Quarries, Briagolong - $10/n pay in town at General Store, nice river and toilets
  • Deptford north of Bairnsdale
  • Mt Taylor north of Bairnsdale -lots of mozzies?
  • Log Crossing in the Colquhoun state Park. About 25 km from Bairnsdale north of Lakes Entrance
  • Kalimna Hotel Lakes Entrance
  • Lake Tyers
    • Glasshouse campground
    • Trident Arm — in Toorloo Arm
    • free behind the WaterWheel tavern but buy a meal, power, water, very close to the water; 2N max.

  • Woods Point camp ground near Orbost
  • Drummer Rainforest Walk near Cann River - toilets, picnic table, fairly quiet
  • Genoa free camping
