- any prices are indicative and are subject to change by the retailers
- Some tents and swags will take a lot longer and need more space to dry out before storage - if you live in a flat or unit then this needs to be a strong consideration
- even in dry weather, the floor of a tent is likely to get wet - tents without floors may be part of your solution perhaps combined with a 2P hike tent inside it
- a freestanding 2P hiking tent will be the easiest to dry out - can be turned upside down in the sun before packing up and takes little room at home if it is still wet
- touring tents and large tents, especially if they have floors will generally require a lot of space to dry out and usually can't be dried out at camp
- if this is a major problem and you need more than a 2P hike tent then an option may be to sleeping in your car for camping and vehicles designed for this
- if all you need is a quick small tent to set up next to your car for 1-2 nights before moving on - an affordable, well made aluminium pole 2P or 3P two door tent may be your best bet
- this will be fast to set up and pack up
- this will not need much space to dry out when you get home and you can usually dry it out in the morning sun and wind by lying it on it's side to air the floor
- two doors allows much greater ventilation options and more versatility if wind directions change, and of course allows second camper to have their own door
- aim for a tent with two long poles and a crossbar as this will generally provide more strength than a single spine tent and more internal space than a two pole tent without a crossbar
- most would prefer a tent where the fly goes over the poles - this means you can remove the fly on hot nights and possibly see the stars, but for those who don't need this, an external pole system allows setting up so the inner tent does not get wet in the rain during set up as essentially the whole tent just clips under the poles
- unless you plan to do overnight hiking, you don't need a more flimsy ultralight style tent so you can avoid the 15D or 20D fabrics and choose a more durable 65D silnylon or a 210T poly
- check the size of the doors and the types of zippers (YKK are generally best)
- then you just need to decide on how much fabric vs mesh you want in the inner tent (warm nights go for full mesh, cold nights you want more fabric)
- take a foam mat or foam squares to place under the tent floor for extra floor protection, less condensation on top of the floor, more warmth and more comfort
- take a tarp to set up over the tent if you find it starts leaking in the rain, or you want extra wind protection or sun protection
- by having the above, you can get by with a more affordable tent for $AU80-300 - check out tents on Aliexpress or Temu direct from China - ensure it is seam sealed!
- eg. GeerTop TopRoad tents - although these do not have a crossbar, they have mesh windows in the two doors for extra ventilation / warmth options
- if you regularly stay more than 2-3 nights at one spot then a larger “touring tent” in which you can stand up in may be worth the extra hastle of setting up, packing up and more difficult drying
Introduction
- there is no one perfect tent or shelter for all purposes or people
- for general hiking with a tent, you will want a tent under 3kg, and preferably under 2kg for one person using a 2-person tent
- a 2P tent is preferred for most hikers as it allows a bit more livability and space for your gear even if you are solo, and if it is freestanding, it will fit on most hotel balconies if you want separation from your travel companion in a twin share arrangement
- most people will be happy with a marginally lighter 3-season tent (see comparison of mainly mesh tents for warm nights) but those going to colder areas or wishing to have more storm-proof or dust-storm proof tents will prefer a full fabric 4-season tent with stronger poles (see comparison of full fabric 2P and 3P tents for colder nights)
- some hikers wish to go for the lightest possible tents - see overnight ultralight bushwalking shelters and equipment
- for camping next to your car a "touring" tent provides much more livability, additional shade awning and a height over 180cm gives the ability to stand up inside but these are generally 10-30kg and are generally 4-12 person in size, while some will prefer a swag or other shelter
Quick summary
- are you going to be camping in the snow?
- ⇒ you need a tent designed for snow which won't collapse with weight of snow and has minimal mesh eg. alpine 4 season hiking tent or a dome tent or tipi tent
- ⇒ you may wish to consider a hot tents (tents with wood stoves inside) if you can carry a wood stove (~3kg for a small titanium stove with chimney)
- are you likely to have extremely dusty conditions?
- eg. sandy coastal areas or deserts with strong winds > 60kph
- ⇒ this will be miserable for you no matter what tent, especially if it is warm conditions - maybe postpone your trip but if you have to, consider a snow type tent where you can block nearly all ventilation and it will need to be strong enough to withstand the winds
- a roof top tent can have less dust exposure in lesser winds but are still susceptible to dust entry
- bring eye mask, ear cover and a face mask to reduce dust getting into your orifices
- are you camping in areas with crocodiles?
- a roof top tent might be your best option to get you off the ground
- are you doing a long extended hike such as a 100km through trail?
- ⇒ consider an expensive Dyneema / cuben fibre 2P trekking pole tent for the lightest weight and excellent weather protection
- are you mainly hiking in relatively warm conditions?
- ⇒ get a 2P mesh tent - these are generally around 2kg
- are you mainly hiking in relatively cool conditions?
- ⇒ get a 2P mainly fabric tent, preferably with dual mesh/fabric doors so you can use in warmer conditions too - these are usually around 2.5kg but can be expensive
- are you car camping and want standing height and space amenity?
- there are many options:
- for autumn/winter/spring camping in southern parts of Australia consider either:
- hot tents (tents with wood stoves inside) and a 2P hiking tent inside or a swag inside
- swag with tarp or awning and an external camp fire (this is often favoured by 4WD campers but it does impact the environment leaving fire scars and is not great in strong winds or rain)
- of course these can be used in summer without the stove as long as they are designed with lots of ventilation and perhaps mosquito protection (although the 2P tent or swag gives this)
- for summer, see touring tents you can stand up in if you want something with standing height instead of using a hiking tent, or you can use your winter tent without the stove
- “Fast Frame” touring tents have their place when you want something to go up fast and provide a Blockout Dark room experience but there is a price to pay:
- they are relatively large and heavy to pack away
- drying out the floor is a real pain
- some don't even keep insects out despite having a floor (eg. Oztrail 6P)
- putting the fly on is necessary for wet or windy weather and this usually takes about 20-30 minutes
- if the frame gets damaged you will probably need to throw it away (at least with dome tents and tunnel tents, you can buy new poles and often can apply a fix in the field)
- if strong winds > 60kph are likely
- ensure your tent design and pitching is adequate to cope with the winds (aerodynamic designs with low height and strong alloy poles are generally needed)
- swags, tipi tents and geodesic domes are generally strong wind tolerant as are low profile alpine tunnel hiking tents, next best are the high quality 4 season hiking 1-2P dome tents
- ensure you have strong enough tent pegs which will not be pulled out of the ground or sand or will twist and release the guy rope
- for larger tents on sand, you should use heavy duty sand pegs or angle iron pegs and hit them in with a sledge hammer!
- ensure you have all the guy rope points guyed out - consider springs on your guys for larger tents and regularly check them
- if in doubt, pack up the tent and wait out until the strong winds pass
- very few tents will survive winds > 80-100kph!
- a budget fibreglass pole 2-4P tent is unikely to survive strong wind gusts of 50-60kph! - the poles will snap then puncture the fly and let the rain in and soak your sleeping gear - you have been warned!
Factors to consider in choosing a tent
- like many things in life your “best” tent to buy will be determined by a range of factors:
- will you have space at home to dry it out before packing away?
- all tents with floors will get wet even in dry conditions
- freestanding tents may be able to be rolled onto their sides to allow bottom to dry out at camp site
- if you store a wet tent for more than a few days, you will need to throw it out due to mould!
- price
- in general, the lighter a high quality tent for the level of storm proofing is, the more expensive it will be
- cheap tents under $AU100 are likely to fail in strong winds and not be adequately watersealed and potentially expose you to a very cold, wet night - only use these in guaranteed fair weather conditions, although they could make a nice insect tent for hot nights (as long as no thunderstorms are forecast)
- weight you are prepared to carry if hiking
- if hiking with 1 or 2 others, you may be able to share the tent and thus the load which may make a 3P tent more appealing
- car campers have the luxury of allowing more weight for either lower cost or greater space, strength and/or durability
- if hiking for many days on a trail then weight and packability become increasingly important and thus many will prefer a trekking pole tent over a freestanding tent - and whilst these will also be less likely to fail in being able to be set up (eg. no poles to break), they do suffer from much more condensation issues as they are generally single wall tents, they are not as robust in strong winds and you can't take the fly off to watch the night sky.
- if hiking in alpine areas in possible snow conditions, a tunnel tent may offer a better compromise between weight and storm proofing than a dome or a trekking tent.
- packed size
- the degree to which tents can pack down to, in particular, the pole length, can have important ramifications with your hiking set up.
- some touring tents you can stand up in such as Oztent RV series are 2m long and need to be carried on a roof rack
- is it freestanding without pegs or ropes?
- freestanding is important if you wish to be able to move it easily after setting up, or if you want to set up on concrete or wooden elevated camp sites which are becoming common in NZ, Grampians, and Tasmania.
- freestanding is also important if you wish to set it up on a balcony, patio or rooftop
- these tents still DO need to be pegged down and use guy ropes for stability in strong winds
- in general, trekking pole tents and tunnel tents are NOT freestanding, and not all dome tents are freestanding
- space and livability - how many people and much space do you want per person
- generally a 2P tent is best for one person and a 3P tent is best for 2 people, but if weight is critical and livability is not so critical, then a 1P is just OK for one person.
- a 3P version of a 2P tent is generally 30cm wider, 5cm taller and minimally heavier
- a 4P touring tent will snuggly fit 2 adults and 2 young children and is best for 1-2 adults, and if you want some room for your gear and 2 kids, you should aim for a 6P tent as minimum for a family.
- do you need to factor in spending many hours in the tent waiting for the rain to clear?
- internal tent height may be a significant factor especially for tall people, although the taller the tent the more stresses in strong winds and the larger the air volume in the tent so the less warm it will keep you
- dual doors vs one door
- especially useful if two people sleeping and also if the wind direction changes
- very handy as a backup exit in case there is danger at one door eg. snake
- door size
- large doors make it easier for ingress/egress, provide better ventilation if full nylon inner canopy, reduce stress on your back getting in and out, and potentially allow two people to sit in door side by side as they enjoy their meal looking out over the horizon
- vestibule space to provide storage for backpacks, etc and perhaps allow cooking out of the rain
- Exped Orion is great for this giving 95cm space
- durability and toughness
- do you need it to withstand school kids or severe environments
- ability to withstand strong winds
- these can occur anytime and its here when cheap tents especially with fibreglass poles tend to fail and end up in the bin
- aerodynamic stability of tent design is an important factor as well as strength of poles and ability to attach guy ropes, especially at the wind end.
- the taller the tent the more wind stress it needs to cope with
- ability to cope with blizzards
- dome tents with crossover poles on the top generally provide best protection from snow weight and also are better when winds change direction
- tunnel tents generally have poles crossing on the sides which offer best side wind protection but being rectangular will not be as good when the wind direction changes
- your safety depends on the tent holding up and keeping you dry - it should be a 4 season tent with the fly being at least 30D nylon, and the floor at least 70D nylon with at least 10,000mm waterhead rating and sufficient guy points to keep it secure
- each peg out point may require 2 or 3 pegs to create security in strong winds and perhaps reinforced by a large rock on top of the guy rope
- if deep snow, then wider “sand” pegs may be needed
- ability to cope with heavy rain and water under the tent
- PU nylon fly is better than silicon nylon flies for wet weather at the cost of more susceptibility to UV
- floors need to be at least 5000mm waterhead rated, 10,000mm is better while some Mont tents boast 25,000mm which is almost as good as Gortex
- vestibule design needs to ensure rain spray is minimal into the tent when the vestibule is opened - the Exped Orion excels at this thanks to its long ridge pole and deep vestibule of 95cm.
- ability to keep you warm in cold weather
- the fly needs to be adequate to keep the internal dry
- the inner “canopy” being full fabric such as nylon is useful in southern areas of Australia or in alpine hikes
- doors should be full mesh PLUS full nylon to give the greatest versatility although this does come at a weight cost
- the bigger the tent the less warm it will keep you
- ability to ventilate adequately to avoid your breathing causing condensation and making everything wet
- ability to open ceiling vents
- dual wall tents generally avoid the issue of condensation making you wet inside the tent which is a problem with single wall tents
- ability to ventilate in hot humid conditions
- inner “canopy” tent needs to either have lots of mesh, or at least two large mesh doors, and it needs to be able to have the fly removed
- canvas tents have the additional option of making the canvas wet to create an evaporative air conditioner effect, but these are heavy and need relatively dry air conditions for this to be effective
- ability to minimise entry of dust or sand in wind storms
- fully enclosed fabric inner canopies are probably the best bet
- blockout or blackout “darkened” tents to help you sleep at festivals
- some tents are designed to block out 99% of light but these are generally heavy tents designed fro car camping and not for hiking
- the extra material may help to reduce temperatures during the day and keep you warmer at night
- luxury items such as:
- internal pockets
- gear loft to store clothes etc overhead
- internally accessible zippable vents preferably with zips for both mesh and nylon options
- ability to peg open vestibule flaps
- ceiling hooks to hold lamps, etc
- guy rope management systems
- reflective parts for better visibility at night
- internal lighting system such as battery operated LED strips
- higher quality zips
- glow in the dark zips to make them easier to find
- snow skirts - these apparently are generally not needed in Australia as the Aussie snow tends to be more icy, but can be used for added wind chill protection in floor-less tents such as tipi tents
- tent set up versatility
- can it be set up easily in heavy rain without the inner canopy getting wet?
- in hot conditions when you want the lightest pack, can you set it up with just the fly and poles (and perhaps a footprint) without the inner canopy, or can it be set up with just the inner canopy without a fly?
- can you attach extra space such as an additional vestibule or a canopy to provide a space to cook, eat or sit in the shade or out of the rain
2P freestanding tents with mainly nylon inners for most weather conditions in southern parts of Australia in 2021
- best true 4 season performance and versatility for weight

- storm proof in snow alpine conditions and can be made reasonably dust/sand proof in strong coastal winds yet lots of lovely ventilation for warm summer nights

- most livable, spacious and rugged storm proof 4 season tent especially for tall people

- note there is also a great 3P option the Orion III which is even taller, wider and only 400g heavier and $AU100 more expensive - for my money this may be the better buy especially if you are car camping or sharing weight with 1-2 other hikers
- ridge poles extend well past canopy to ensure even if vestibule is open rain is unlikely to enter
- large 95cm vestibules giving a total 2.3 sq.m space and with the large doors with dual full mesh/full nylon gives not only fantastic ingress/egress but great temperature control/ventilation options while allowing two people to sit side by side in the door.
- inner height is an impressive 125cm plus there is a large gear loft
- in general use fly is permanently attached to inner canopy and poles insert into the fly so setting up in heavy rain should not get the inner tent wet

4 season winter HOT tent
- these are generally floorless tents with a stove jack for a wood stove chimney - see hot tents (tents with wood stoves inside)
- tipi versions are amongst the most storm resistant designs and cope well in snow but are NOT freestanding.
- whilst they are mainly used for snow conditions, they are also well suited to inland areas with very cold nights although you will not get much of a view of the night sky
- they generally have an optional inner mesh tent for use when insects are problematic - or you could use a 2P mozzie tent inside it (if it fits)
- most are high enough to allow standing and are very fast to set up - just peg a couple of points then insert the centre pole then pull the tent out and peg the opposite points, then peg the remaining and guy ropes if needed.
- that is faster than a “Fast Frame” touring tent when you add the fly to the time taken and generally much lighter and more storm proof but still giving plenty of space and height
- a two door one such as the 2.4m tall, 3.8m diameter, 4.2kg 4P OneTigris Rock Fortress teepee style Hot Tent will also be great in summer in the southern states with the optional inner mesh tent or 2P Mozzie tent but does not have Blockout for added sun/heat protection
the Australian tropical coast
- needless to say, this is going to be hot, humid (which will really reduce the lifespan of any tent) and perhaps wet and subject to attack by a range of animals ranging from ants who will love your tent as a refuge, especially if there is food, to dengue fever carrying mosquitoes, rodents who will eat through your tent if they detect food and then if you are silly you have crocodiles, cassowaries and snakes to deal with.
- sleeping at night generally means NO sleeping bags but just light cotton sheets and plenty of fresh air so a tent with lots of mesh and ventilation is imperative as is a fly if you are in the wet season (Nov-Apr) as it rains very hard and frequently along with frequent thunderstorms and you are likely to get a cyclone or two, so most campers will go in the more tolerable but perhaps more boring dry season
- a swag which is so popular in inland Australia and southern coastal regions is not going to be fun in the wet season when you will appreciate being well above ground - perhaps a rooftop tent or tree tent, or at least an elevated bed.
- general tent requirements in the tropics
- freestanding tent with inner tent mostly no-see-um mesh with a very waterproof floor and able to be set up without a fly to allow a tarp or no cover option
- examples include:
- Sea to Summit Telos TR2 almost full mesh, very versatile light tent
- Mont Moondance II has the most waterproof 25000mm floor but only half mesh
- Exped Lyra II half mesh, 10,000mm floor
- Wilderness Equipment I-Explore 2 Mesh 8000mm floor but only 40% mesh
- MSR Zoic full mesh but floor only 3000mm waterhead
- Big Agnes have full mesh tents but floors are only 1500mm waterhead - similar to Exped Mira II
- Big Sky Soul 2 is full mesh but fly is inadequate design to keep it dry
- very waterproof fly and potentially an additional tarp for shelter in the rain and to dry out clothes
- some may choose a mozzie tent under a tarp as a good option, or just a mesh inner of a tent and a tarp instead of the fly
- examples include:
- Mont BatCave2 UL with Mont Batwing Tarp
- MSR Front Range™ Bug/Floor Insert with Front Range Shelter 3000mm waterhead floor
- some prefer a hammock with a double bottom layer (mozzies bite through single layer) and a mozzie dome as it is often easier to find a spot and it gets you off the ground (but not away from ants, mozzies and arboreal snakes!)
- make sure you have driplines set up to prevent water running down the ridgeline into the hammock when using a hammock tarp
- in nights with a minimum below about 20degC you will get cold in a hammock so you will need some under insulation such as a pad between the two layers
- not too expensive as it will not last long up there
Central Australian desert in winter
- this is likely to be mild to warm, sunny and dry by day with clear sky nights which make for very cold and even sub-zero cold nights
- however, occasionally if a tropical cyclone crosses land and ends up as a low pressure system you can get hot, humid prolonged rain conditions but these are uncommon during winter when most people would travel to the Red Centre
- this makes tent choice a little problematic as you need warmth at night but also, most campers in the desert value a clear view of the night sky
- a popular choice here is the swag
- alternatively a freestanding tent with nylon lower and a mesh upper and removable UV resistant fly (and preferably a heavier duty tarp set up to shelter from the midday sun) is a reasonable option if you have a warm sleeping bag and thermal mat examples include:

- Exped Lyra II
- MacPac DuoLight
- Sea to Summit Telos TR2 but almost full mesh which will be colder at night, however, very versatile light tent
- many other tents as you probably don't need highly waterproof floors
