Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4 lenses

• most professionals would prefer the f/2.8 aperture of the larger, heavier, more expensive Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lenses
• unlike Canon, Nikon has not produced a 70-200mm f/4 lens until 2012, it's closest lenses have been:
  • AF 70-210mm f/4 sold 1986-1988 but had very slow AF not competitive with Canon's EOS system
  • AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 sold 1987-2000
  • AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR sold 2006 onwards
• a nice lens but some users feel than the Tamron 70-300 Di VC is a better buy as:
  • longer zoom
  • image stabiliser is even better than VRIII
  • perhaps sharper than the Nikon AF-S 70-300 VR
  • much less expensive but has variable aperture not constant f/4

• introduced in 2012
• smaller, lighter, much less expensive, closer focusing, with perhaps better optical quality and VR than the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G VRII lens but you do lose a stop of aperture

  • “lens barrel is constructed form high quality plastics and the lens mount is metal, with a rubber gasket to help prevent the ingress of dust and moisture into the camera. Unfortunately the lens itself is not weather sealed though”
