the Rubicon River river descends 693 metres over its NW 26km journey to the Goulburn River from east of Buxton and a hydroelectric power station was built in 1924 and is now heritage listed. The forest is regrowth following the 1939 bushfires, although the region was again partly impacted by the 2009 fires.
there are three first come first served free camping areas located on the valley floor along the Rubicon River:
