• air pumps fall into one of three main groups:
  • high volume low pressure for inflatables designed to inflate up to 2-3psi:
    • airbeds and pool toys generally need 0.3-0.5 psi
    • towable tubes generally need 2 psi
    • Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) generally need 2-3psi
  • high volume, medium pressure for air tents
    • inflatable air beam tents generally need max 6-7psi
    • some inflatable kayaks with drop-stitch or rigid floors may require higher pressure floors, up to 6 to 10 PSI (but the main chambers and sides are usually 2-3psi)
  • low volume, high pressure for air tents and car tyres
    • car tyres generally need around 36psi
• air pumps are generally very noisy and can only be used for a limited amount of time before the motor overheats
• although many hikers will pump up their sleeping mats by mouth as weight is everything to them and pumps just add unnecessary weight, this introduces moisture and risk of mould growth inside
• but for those who don't mind carrying something extra, an air pump can be very handy, especially if it has other functionality
  • air pump itself can be used for:
    • inflating mattresses, water floating devices, kayaks, etc
    • deflating the above
    • deflating your clothing packing bags
    • providing air to stimulate your wood fire into action
  • some pumps are adequate to inflate air tents
  • some pumps are powerful enough to inflate car tyres
    • most of the small lithium hand held pumps will only be suitable for tyres up to small car size, owners of medium to large cars may prefer a dedicated 12V pump
    • 4WD owners who go off-road will frequently need to deflate/inflate the tires to suit conditions and a high quality heavy duty pump is required for the large 4WD tyres, preferably with ability to deflate to a preset pressure
  • some devices have additional functionality:
    • USB power bank to charge smart phones etc
    • torch/lantern
    • quite fan mode to cool down your tent
• a pump becomes mandatory for larger items such as kayaks or large air beds

• usually plastic tubes with 28.5mm inner screw connections to the pump and a 24mm outer diam Luer-type lock outlet connector
• air tents, kayaks and SUPs generally have Boston valves (2-way screw valve)
  • some Kayaks have Halkey-Roberts (HR) Valve (spring Luer lock like connector) or a Military / Push-Push Valve
  • some air tents have a Dynamic Speed Valve which has a central button pin to deflate and then press again to get ready to inflate, inflate via Luer-lock like connector (Vanguard have their own design for their tents)
• self-inflating air mattresses have a range of options:
  • rotating valve with screw on or tapered 17mm outer push in connector - eg. Zempire, etc
  • 3 flap valve system with push in connection eg. Sea 2 Summit
  • rotate and pull out “male” valve - only allows blowing air in, or a plastic adapter that connects outside the valve as a female
• inflatable balls
  • usually have a hollow metal needle or hollow plastic connection which inserts into the small valve
  • there are adapters to connect these to most style pumps eg. car tyre pumps

• car tyre Schrader valves and connection
• air compressor output connectors
  • common sizes for flow capacity are 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch, with 1/4 inch being most frequent for general compressed air tools. There are also 3/8 inch connectors
  • four primary style categories are: automotive, industrial (sometimes called “M-style”), ARO, and V-style
  • thread types common on connectors include National Pipe Thread Taper (NPT), British Standard Pipe Thread (BSPT) and Metric
    • NPT is most common in the US thus 1/8 NPT is 1/8th inch with 27 threads per inch (TPI)
      • tapered thread
    • BSPT is also used internationally and denoted by G thus G 1/2 is for nominal pipe size 1/2 inch with 14 threads per inch
      • requires a sealing ring or gasket since threads are not tapered to seal
    • Metric:
      • has a standard 60-degree thread angle
  • color coding is used by some manufacturers to denote type: red (automotive), green (industrial), blue (ARO), yellow (V-style), but this is not universal
  • for most portable compressors and air tools, a 1/4 inch industrial style (M-style) quick-connect fitting is standard

• most have multiple connectors and inflate and deflate functionality
• some have USB-A out for charging phones
• some have a light
• they have variable battery sizes and waterproofing
• these usually have inflation pressures of 2.5-4.5kpa (ie. max out at 0.58psi) and deliver 190-300L/min
